When Is the Best Time to Sell a Private Jet?

April 14, 20264 min read

The best time to sell a private jet is rarely just about the calendar. Aircraft values are shaped by market inventory, buyer demand, maintenance status, economic conditions, and the specific desirability of the aircraft model. A seller with the right aircraft at the right moment can achieve stronger pricing, shorter time on market, and better negotiating leverage.

Market Inventory Is the First Signal

One of the strongest indicators of seller leverage is available inventory. When fewer comparable aircraft are available, buyers have less choice — which can support stronger pricing, especially for desirable models with good records and strong maintenance status. AMSTAT reported that preowned business jet inventory tightened to 6.6% of the active fleet in Q1 2026, below the 8.2% historical average, while median values rose 3%.

Transaction Activity Still Matters

Inventory is only one side of the equation. Transaction activity matters too. Q1 2026 showed preowned business jet transactions were down 11.4% compared with Q1 2025, but still 9.1% above the 10-year Q1 average. That paints a nuanced picture: not a runaway market, but not a dead one either. Buyers are still active, but they are more selective.

Maintenance Timing Can Make or Break a Sale

The right time to sell may also depend on where your aircraft sits in its maintenance cycle. An aircraft approaching major inspections, engine events, or expensive calendar items may face heavier buyer scrutiny. Sellers sometimes benefit from going to market before major maintenance exposure becomes a central negotiation point. On the other hand, completing major inspections before sale can make an aircraft more attractive, depending on the model and cost involved.

Cosmetic Timing Matters Too

Buyers respond to presentation. Fresh interiors, clean paint, updated avionics, and strong photos can dramatically improve buyer interest. An aircraft that looks tired may receive lower offers even if the mechanical condition is sound. For high-value aircraft, first impressions are financial.

When You Should Consider Selling

It may be a good time to explore a sale if inventory for your model is limited, your aircraft has strong records, major maintenance is not immediately looming, recent upgrades improve marketability, buyer demand remains active in your aircraft category, and you are 6–12 months away from making a change anyway. Many owners wait until they are fully ready to sell — and by then, they may have missed a better market window.
